I am writing today in the hopes that you will pass along the following information to your members.
As you know, the Legislature passed a measure in May of 1998 aimed at assisting all parties involved in the property tax payment process -- consumers, treasurers and escrow agents. The intent of (1997-1998) Wis Act 315 was to get taxpayers their property tax bills earlier in December, and mortgage companies the property tax bill in a timely manner so that checks could be issued.
Under Section 74.03 of the WI Statutes, the clerk of the taxation district shall transfer the tax roll, prepared under s.70.65 to the treasurer of the taxation district by December 8
th . The exception to this, under (2) of s. 74.03 states: The clerk of the taxation district shall transfer the tax roll, prepared under s. 70.65, to the treasurer of the taxation district by the third Monday in December if the taxation district has in effect a policy under which it issues a check for the excess of the amount escrowed by a taxpayer and paid to the taxation district by December 31 over the amount of taxes due within 15 business days after the amount is paid to the taxation district.Again, a friendly reminder to your members would be greatly appreciated. I am hopeful it will help to ensure statewide compliance in the upcoming tax cycle.
